Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. While it is often diagnosed in childhood, many individuals continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. However, recently many more people with ADHD have reached adulthood without a formal diagnosis.
ADHD can manifest as difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, which can impact various aspects of life, including work, relationships, and daily responsibilities.
Adults with ADHD may struggle with task organisation, time management, and maintaining focus. They might find it challenging to follow through on projects or manage their schedules effectively. This can lead to feelings of frustration, low self-esteem, and even anxiety or depression, as they navigate the demands of adult life while coping with their symptoms.
Despite these challenges, many adults with ADHD also possess unique strengths, such as creativity, problem-solving abilities, and high energy levels.
These can be 'super-powers' if harnessed correctly.
Understanding and managing ADHD is crucial for adults to harness these strengths while mitigating the difficulties associated with the disorder. Treatment options, including therapy, medication, coaching and lifestyle changes, can help individuals develop coping strategies and improve their overall quality of life.
Awareness and education about ADHD in adults are essential for reducing stigma and promoting understanding.
We at Neurocalm believe that by recognising ADHD as a legitimate condition that requires support and accommodation, with this society can create a more inclusive environment for those affected by it.
With the right resources and support, adults with ADHD can thrive and lead fulfilling lives.

A professional Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessment is crucial for understanding an individual's unique challenges and strengths; ultimately, providing them with a treatment plan that works for them.
Our comprehensive in-person assessment involves a clinical professional who is well-versed in ADHD. This expert will conduct a structured interview, noting behavioral observations, and using a standardised rating scale to gather detailed information about the individual's symptoms and their impact on the person's daily life.
During the assessment process, our professional wil create a friendly and supportive environment to help the individual feel comfortable and safe. This rapport is essential, as it encourages honest communication and allows for a more accurate evaluation. The clinician may also involve family members or caregivers when appropriate, as their insights can provide valuable context regarding the individual’s behavior in different settings.
Ultimately, the goal of an in-person ADHD assessment is to provide a thorough understanding of the individual's situation, leading to tailored recommendations for intervention and support.
By combining clinical expertise with a warm, approachable demeanor, our professionals can ensure that the assessment process is both informative and reassuring for those seeking help with ADHD.
In the UK the current predominant treatment for ADHD, is medication - with Methylphenidate used for adults (Brand names: Ritalin, Concerta, Delmosart, Equasym, Medikinet).
Currently, researchers estimate that around 58% of people with ADHD are treated with medicines. If this is applied to the England (ADHD) prevalence figure, we would expect to see 1.3 million people receiving ADHD medicines, in coming years, compared to the 233,000 who did so in 2022/2023.

The cost to the NHS of Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulants and ADHD medicines was £104m in 2022/2023, with half of this money spent on methylphenidate (£52m) and £33m spent on lisdexamfetamine.
There are some commonly known side effects with ADHD medication; including: headaches, feeling aggressive, irritable, depressed, anxious or tense, trouble sleeping (insomnia), loss of appetite – this can lead to weight loss or poor weight gain, stomach aches, dry mouth; and feeling or being sick.
There are, additionally, less common side effects of Methylphenidate, which may cause greater concern: Including: mood or personality changes, thoughts about harming yourself or others, fast or irregular heartbeats (palpitations); or start seeing, feeling or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations).
It is known that Methylphenidate can be addictive and cause dependence, this risk is greater with extended-release tablets and in people with a history of drug dependence and/or alcoholism.
Tolerance can also develop to methylphenidate's effect, resulting in larger dosage to be required to achieve the same effect.
